Alcoholics Anonymous was founded in the 1930’s by Bill W. and Dr. Bob. Today there are over 114, 000 AA groups worldwide helping over 1.9 million members. 63% of these members have received some form of counseling or professional treatment. The goal of this course is to educate therapists on the 12-Steps and 12-Traditions, which form the foundation of all 12-Step programs. To complete this course the therapist must read the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions book by Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, Inc. This book is available for purchase or to download at no charge from the Alcoholics Anonymous website at www.aa.org. Or, you can go directly to the literature required for the above course at www.aa.org/1212/

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:

  1. Describe the principles of 12-Step programs, which lead to recovery.
  2. List the 12-Steps.
  3. Discuss any of the 12-Steps with a client who is also participating in AA.
  4. Describe why each Step is necessary.
  5. Recognize and describe the defensives that often surface, while completing different Steps in the program.
  6. Describe the programs spiritual base and to assist the non-believing or atheist client in exploring what might be their “higher power.”

The Big Book Review

The Big Book was originally published in 1939 and is now in its 4th Edition. The basic text has not changed from its original printing. The Big Book forms the foundation of Alcoholics Anonymous. The primary objective of this course is to familiarize the therapist with the principals that shape this fellowship of recovery and to give therapists a chance to experience an AA meeting first-hand.

To complete this course the therapist must read the first 170 pages of the Alcoholics Anonymous Big Book, the appendices (pages 563-575), and attend at an Open AA meeting. Pages 171 – 561 are comprised of 43 personal stories of individuals who have been helped by AA. Although they are not included as part of the test or required to earn your 11 CE units, they are extremely interesting to read and may be helpful in understanding your alcoholic client and the challenges they are facing. Understanding Narcotics Anonymous

Narcotics Anonymous Basic Text was originally published in 1983 and is now in its 6th Edition. This Basic Text forms the foundation of Narcotics Anonymous. The primary objective of this course is to familiarize the therapist with the principals that shape this fellowship of recovery and to give therapists a chance to experience an NA meeting first-hand.

To complete this course the therapist must read the first 103 pages (through Chapter 10) of the Narcotics Anonymous Basic Text and attend at an Open NA meeting. Pages 107 – 278 are comprised of 38 personal stories of individuals who have been helped by NA. Although they are not included as part of the test or required to earn your 7 CE units, they are extremely interesting to read and may be helpful in understanding your drug addicted client and the challenges he or she is facing. This book is available for purchase or to download at no charge from the Narcotics Anonymous website at www.na.org.

  2. Recognize common roadblocks associated with each Step.
  3. Discuss any of the 12-Steps with a client who is also participating in NA.
  4. Identify common defensives that often surface, while a recovering addict is completing his or her personal inventory.
  5. Describe and discuss the spiritual aspect of Narcotics Anonymous with a client.
  6. Identify when it might be appropriate to refer a client to Narcotics Anonymous.
