This course has been designed to familiarize participants with the Brief Relationship Workup, which is a tool for use in couple's therapy. The Brief Relationship Workup is designed to help the couple understand their relationship dynamics. The Brief Relationship Workup will also give you a tool for helping couples identify old protective defenses and "habits" that are self-limiting in their relationship. Through this training the therapist will learn how to do this in a way that minimizes defensiveness, while addressing the sources of conflict in the relationship.
This course is comprised of a 64-minute online slide and audio presentation, a short written summary of the theory behind the Workup, and the Brief Relationship Workup and Synthesis forms. In the slide/audio presentation the therapist will learn how to use the Brief Relationship Workup and Synthesis forms with their clients. Dr. Brainerd will also provide examples of how to fine-tune the use of these tools to address your client's needs.
After completing this course the therapist will have permission to re-print and use the Brief Relationship Workup and Synthesis Forms with couples in their therapy practice. These forms are in Word format and can be downloaded to your computer for future use. There will also be opportunities for supervision from Dr. Brainerd.
- GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:
- The therapist will know how to use the Brief Relationship Workup form with couples.
- The therapist will be able to help the couple realize that the traits of their partner that they perceive as "negative," may have also played into their initial attraction to their partner, and therefore may not necessarily an indicator of a bad relationship.
- The therapist will have a tool to facilitate them in helping couples understand how and why they were initially attracted to each other.
- The therapist will practice using the synthesis form as a tool in therapy.
- The therapist will learn how to help couples understand their unconscious attraction to each other by using the Brief Relationship Workup form.
- The therapist will learn to clearly align himself or herself with the positive strivings in each person.
Reawaken Native Roots
Written by: Kim Scott, M.A., M.F.T.
6 Continuing Education Credits - $57.00
(Beginning to Intermediate Level)
In this class we will give a brief overview of Native American history and societal issues faced by Native American clients. Understanding Native American history is essential to any therapeutic work with Native clients, because their history is one of cultural genocide, racism, government intervention, and the internalization of prejudices inflicted by the "white man," each of which can have a tremendous impact on mental health issues and the development of a strong therapeutic bond.
The therapist will also learn about the prevalence of alcoholism, drug abuse, depression, spousal abuse, and the unique barriers Native Americans face when entering treatment. And finally, we will discuss how to provide culturally sensitive treatment and when to make a referral to a traditional form of healing.
- GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:
- To be able to list 3 historic events which contributed to the cultural genocide of the Native American.
- To be able to describe the 2 most important elements of cross-cultural counseling.
- Summarize the research done on Intergenerational Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and describe how it relates to the Native Americans.
