The National Instituted on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) developed this manual as a guide for Marriage and Family Therapists who are working with at risk families and families with Alcohol problems. It will provide you with background information on defining characteristics and the prevalence of a range of alcohol problems, as well as introducing the therapist to an "alcohol problems framework" and its implications for alcohol treatment. This manual also provides the therapist with a number of assessment tools, including the Brief Drinker Profile Consumption Section.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:

  1. Introduce the therapist to an "alcohol problems framework" and its implications for alcohol treatment and intervention.
  2. Provide the therapist with background information on defining characteristics and the prevalence of a range of alcohol problems.
  3. Provide the therapist with a "Clinical Toolbox" to conduct effective screenings and assessments of alcohol problems.
  4. Teach the therapist the essentials of providing brief interventions for alcohol problems.
  5. Provide the therapist with a number of resources that will help them utilize the various treatment strategies available.
  6. Learn how to decide whether to treat, when to treat and how to select an appropriate intervention.
