(Beginning Level)

Developed by: The Co-Occurring Center for Excellence (COCE), which is funded through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS)

1 Credit CE Course - Free

Only about half the people with co-occurring disorders (COD) receive any services within substance abuse and mental health settings. Settings outside the traditional substance abuse and mental health settings, where service missions do not include a primary focus on COD, are the focus of this overview paper. Some of these settings include primary health settings, public safety settings, the criminal justice system, and social work settings. These settings should be prepared to identify and effectively respond to persons with COD. The use of specialized techniques appropriate to these settings can increase the likelihood that the person with COD will access treatment.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:

  1. Learn about the non-traditional service settings where people with COD are often found and the importance of this.
  2. Be able to describe the different non-SA/MH settings.
  3. Learn CAGE-AID and in which setting it is most commonly used.
  4. Understand the goal of "No Wrong Door."
  5. Understand how special settings help determine COD severity.
  6. Learn about the continuum of responses to persons with COD who appear in health settings.
