In this class the therapist will learn some tips on how to provide culturally sensitive treatment when working with Native American clients. The therapist will learn how to determine the client's acculturation level, cues to be conscious of, and when to explore dreams.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:

  1. To be able describe the role of balance in illness when working Native American clients.
  2. To be able to describe 10 primary differences between Native American values and Western values.
  3. To understand the significance of storytelling in treatment with Native American clients.
  4. To be able to assess an individual's level of acculturation.
  5. To understand how different levels of acculturation impact treatment decisions.
  6. To be able to identify when and how to incorporate Native American beliefs and practices into treatment.
