The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), developed this manual as a Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP). TIPs are best-practice guidelines and the topics are based on the field’s current needs for information and guidance. TIPs are composed by a large and diverse group of experts. A major goal of each TIP is to convey "front-line" information quickly and responsibly.
Clinicians are increasingly aware of the important differences between men and women with regard to the physical effects of substance use and the speci?c issues related to substance use disorders. They are also recognizing that these differences have an impact on treatment—that gender does make a difference. When women’s speci?c needs are addressed from the outset, improved treatment engagement, retention, and outcomes are the result.
This TIP uses a biopsychosociocultural framework based on clinical practice and research centered on women. In this TIP you will learn about the importance of context in women’s substance abuse patterns and treatment. For instance, we will examine the role relationships, gender socialization, and culture play in a woman’s substance use and treatment. The knowledge and models presented here are grounded in women’s experiences, built on women’s strengths, and based on best, research-based practices. The primary goal of this TIP is to assist substance abuse treatment providers in offering effective, up-to-date treatment to adult women with substance use disorders.
