PSYCHODYNAMIC THERAPY

(Beginning to Intermediate Level)

Introduction

There are numerous theories that could be elucidated here as insight oriented approaches, but this course will focus on psychoanalytic theory. There are three primary traditions in psychoanalytic theory; the Classic Freudian, Object Relations theory and Heinz Kohut's Self Psychology. The differences between them are great but sometimes subtle. It is possible to differentiate them based on their beliefs about the direction of a person’s fundamental energy. In Classical Theory the libido seeks pleasure. In Object Relations theory the libido is not pleasure seeking but object seeking. There is a shift from drives to primary, primitive relationships. Finally, in Self Psychology the focus of the energy is toward the transformations of narcissism allowing a damaged self to reactivate and transform early narcissistic needs (Greenson, 1958).

In your own private practice you can use a “psychodynamic approach,” without having to adhere to any one specific faction of this approach. This allows you to incorporate any of the assessment, goals, or interventions applicable from any of the specific schools.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:

  1. To develop a deeper understanding of psychodynamic theory and its application in a clinical setting.
  2. To develop a deeper understanding of the history and breadth of psychodynamic theory.
  3. To develop a deeper knowledge of the theorists and sub-theories of psychodynamic theory.
  4. To learn the fundamental tenets of Freudian, Object-Relations and Self Psychology.
  5. To learn the primary short-term and long-term goals of Freudian, Object-Relations and Self Psychology.
  6. To learn the primary interventions of Freudian, Object-Relations and Self Psychology.
