Psychopharmacology for Therapists

This exciting new course is comprised of 3, 1+ hour video presentations. In the first video, instructor Eric Lyden, gives an overview of psychopharmacology.

He introduces the student to terms they will need to know, reviews the history of psychotropic medications, and concludes with a discussion of current medications used to treat depression. Mr. Lyden discusses the pros and cons of the various types of anti-depressants, which will help the therapist recognize symptoms that their clients might be experiencing and know when to refer them back to their psychiatrist for medication adjustments.

In Part II Mr. Lyden discusses medications used to treat anxiety disorders, attention deficit disorder, and bipolar disorder. In this video he also covers common side effects and toxicity associated with specific medications.

Video III addresses medications used to treat schizophrenia and the common side effects associated with them.

Mr. Lyden also teaches a 2 semester-unit course in psychopharmacology to graduate students at California State University, Northridge (CSUN).

New Treatment Improvement Protocol Course
Substance Abuse Treatment and Domestic Violence

This Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) was created as part of the Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Block Grant technical assistance program. Treatment Improvement Protocols (TIPs) are best practice guidelines for the treatment of substance abuse, provided as a service of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration's Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT).

This TIP, Substance Abuse Treatment and Domestic Violence, presents therapists with an introduction to the field of domestic violence. It gives providers useful information on the role of substance abuse in domestic violence--both among the men who batter and the women who are battered. Useful techniques for detecting and eliciting such information are supplied, along with ways to modify treatment to ensure victims' safety and to stop the cycle of violence in both parties' lives. Legal issues, including duty to warn and confidentiality, are discussed.

Finally, the Panel provides a blueprint for a more integrated system of care that would enhance treatment for both problems. This section includes practical suggestions for establishing linkages both between substance abuse treatment providers and domestic violence support workers and with legal, health care, criminal justice, and other relevant service agencies.

NewsWhat's New In The News?       January 2012

Story1 Welcoming the New Year just doesn't seem complete until I've made my New Year's Resolution. If one of your resolutions is about breaking a habit, then this article at MSN Today called "5 ways to avoid New Year's resolution fails" will come in handy.

Since habits are so hard to break through sheer willpower alone, the first step is to analyze your behavior related to the habit.  Let's say you want to quit smoking.  If you spend 2 weeks tracking your smoking habits, you'll have a much better grasp on when and under what circumstances you light up.  Then you can use this knowledge to help you quit.  For example, if you know that you light up a cigarette every time you pick up the phone then you can plan ahead.  Keep your cigarettes far away from the phone and take up doodling to keep your hands busy while you talk.  Or if you want to lose weight and from your behavior tracking you discover that you always eat an afternoon snack at 3:00; now you can plan ahead.  You can get up from your desk at 2:45 and take a short stroll knowing that there is a beautiful piece of fresh fruit waiting for you at your desk when you get back!

Art Markman, professor of psychology and marketing at the University of Texas at Austin claims that "It's definitely better to create what I call process goals, rather than outcome goals".  For example, if your outcome goal is to lose 30 pounds, a process goal might be to walk for 30 minutes twice a day.

Another important thing to remember is to be kind to yourself.  We all make mistakes and one setback doesn't mean that you've failed.  It just gives you another chance to learn something about yourself and gives you more ammunition to battle the habits!

AddictionandCreativity

I came across this blog by Summer Beretsky on PsychCentral. It's an interview from the creator of project called One Hello World.  The "about" tab on the One Hello World website is just a couple of sentences:

One Hello World is a collection of voicemail set to music.

Leave me a voicemail and I'll write music behind your narrative. Call it a soundtrack to your thoughts. (316) 247-0421.

Give a listen to some of the voicemails, some will bring you to tears and some will inspire you.  But they will all serve to remind you how much we humans have in common.

News3

Scientific American posted an article called The Psychology of Dictatorship. Personality psychologists Coolidge and Segal from the University of Colorado came up with a "big six" constellation of personality disorders that may commonly reflect the personalities of dictators more generally: sadistic, antisocial, paranoid, narcissistic, schizoid, and schizotypal.

They then compare the personality profiles of Adolf Hitler, Saddam Hussein and Kim Jong-il.  Click here to view the comparison.
